Legal Research Internships 2024 – University of Cape Town

The Democratic Governance and Rights Unit (DGRU) in the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is offering seven (7) Legal Research Internships for 2024. Here are the key details:

About the Internship: The Gauteng Division of the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, in partnership with DGRU, is running a ten-month internship programme for young graduates. Interns will be employed by UCT on a ten-month contract and seconded to the Johannesburg High Court and Pretoria High Court.

Remuneration: Interns will receive a stipend of R8,666.67 per month.

Requirements:

  • LLB or four (4) years recognized legal qualification by SAQA.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Information Resource and online retrieval (Westlaw, LexisNexis, Jutastat, and Sabinet) and law library resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all legal research duties for the Judges to prepare judgments.
  • Research and retrieve material from all sources on legal issues as per Judges’ instructions.
  • Read relevant material and analyze thoroughly.
  • Attend court proceedings upon request.
  • Proofread and prepare comprehensive memorandums on research outcomes.
  • Assist in drafting speeches, legal articles, and conference papers.
  • Efficiently manage and prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines.
